The Sardana – A Dance for Universal Peace and Brotherhood

A living metaphor for peace: equality, welcome and a circle wide enough for everyone.

Discover why a Catalan circle dance has become a symbol that the Gaudí Movement offers to the world.

Why the sardana

No centre, no periphery

No centre, no periphery

When the circle forms, everyone is equal. This equality is the first gesture of peace.

A hand extended to everyone

A hand extended to everyone

The sardana does not ask where you come from – it simply welcomes you. And the circle only holds together when everyone plays their part.

A beauty that belongs to everyone

A beauty that belongs to everyone

When the group moves in unison, something emerges that belongs to no one person – a shared image of peace, both fragile and powerful.

Always room for one more

Always room for one more

The circle stays open. Peace, like the sardana, grows by widening its circle – never by closing it.

The Declaration

The founding vision of the Gaudí Movement includes a simple yet ambitious act: to proclaim the sardana as the dance of universal peace and brotherhood. On 22 November 2026, this declaration will be read for the first time – around the very basilica Gaudí himself was inspired to create.

“A declaration for peace, brotherhood and harmony among all humanity, in keeping with Gaudí’s ideals.”

Join us on 22 November 2026 – A Community Tribute to Antoni Gaudí, “A Catalan of Universal Stature”

An international gathering for peace and brotherhood throughout the world, marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death, in Plaça d’Antoni Gaudí and Plaça de la Sagrada Família.

Learn to dance the sardana

Never danced the sardana before? It is easier than it looks. Working closely with our friends at SomSardana, we have put together a short guide to help you get ready for November. (Note, the videos are in Catalan, YouTube may offer closed captions with automatic translation into English)

This page is part of the Movement’s commitment to Peace and Fraternity – one of the eight Gaudí Commitments. Discover other ways we put this commitment into practice: choral music, interfaith dialogue and think tanks dedicated to peace and reconciliation.

Peace grows as the circle widens.
